Horses of Hoofprint Bay: Horse Age, Growth & Retirement
Understand horse age in Horses of Hoofprint Bay: eight-day pregnancy, foals becoming yearlings at four days, adulthood at age 12, and retirement guidance.
How does horse age work?
Horse age is measured in in-game days, also called turns. The official Steam FAQ explains that unit and confirms eventual retirement. Do not convert the displayed number directly into real-world horse years.
The full-release Breeding handbook supplies the growth milestones. It is visible in Rohara’s recording at the Breeding entry, reviewed for the November 4, 2026 release.
| Event or stage | Timing | What the number counts |
|---|---|---|
| Pregnancy | Eight in-game days | Time before the foal is born |
| Foal | Birth until age four | The youngster’s first four days |
| Yearling | From age four | The stage before adulthood |
| Adult | From age 12 | Total days since birth |
The publisher’s release-week FAQ also confirms the eight-day pregnancy and four-day foal stage. See the foal growth guide for the full schedule.
Which day counter should you use?
Separate three counters: the day of your save, your horse’s age and how long you have owned it. Buying a horse does not make its displayed age start from zero.
For a foal born at your yard, count from birth. Four days later it reaches the yearling milestone; 12 days after birth it reaches adulthood. The yearling interval is approximately eight days, rather than another 12 days after the foal stage.
For example, a purchased yearling already aged six has approximately six days remaining before the age-12 adult milestone. That calculation follows the displayed age and handbook threshold. It is not an additional timer triggered by the purchase. The buying guide covers the breeder’s stock and reservation options.
How should you schedule a breeding cycle?
Pregnancy belongs on your calendar before the young horse’s age begins. Eight days of pregnancy, four as a foal and approximately eight as a yearling add up to about 20 days from the start of pregnancy to adulthood. The resulting adult is 12 days old because its age counts from birth.
The handbook allows normal work during the first half of pregnancy. During the second half, riding is unavailable; lunging is possible but provides no strength or endurance gains. A nursing mare can be bred again.
Review breeding, foal training and stable capacity together before planning overlapping generations. A predictable timeline does not remove the need for space, feeding and care.
When do horses retire?
The official FAQ confirms eventual retirement and explains that retired horses are effectively removed from play. The cited sources do not establish an exact retirement age or a verified way to keep a retired horse active. Avoid using an invented cutoff to predict a remaining career.
Neglect is a separate issue: animal welfare can take neglected horses away. Maintain the daily care routine independently of age or future breeding plans.
How should you read older demo age reports?
Demo discussions include a player reporting a birth on save day 13 and adulthood on day 25. That is a 12-day birth-to-adult interval in one recorded experience. The current handbook provides stronger evidence for the full-release threshold and also identifies the earlier yearling transition.
Keep the version, starting event and displayed age attached to any anecdote. A comment about time since purchase is not automatically a measurement of the horse’s whole life. If your game behaves differently, record the version, age and stage label before asking in the official Discord.
